WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COINS IN THE TREVI FOUNTAIN

It is impossible to separate the Trevi fountain and the act of throwing a coin in the waters to make a wish. Thousands flock to the world-famous fountain yearly to marvel at the 18th-century artwork, and to make a wish on the magical waters. But what happens to your hard-earned money once it’s been tossed away?

The proper way to make a wish is to stand with your back facing away from the fountain and throw a coin over your shoulder. One wish is said to ensure your return to the Eternal City, and a second wish will have you fall in love with an Italian!

Making a wish with a coin became famous from a 1954 film called ‘Three Coins in the Fountain’ in which three American Secretaries travel to Italy in search of adventure, and toss their coins in the fountain to make a wish.

Since then, thousands have flocked to the fountain to make their wishes come true, and the fountain boasts a profit of approximately $25 000 a week in coins. Although most who throw their money in, don’t know where it actually goes. In fact, the city of Rome collects it all and gives it to the non-profit organization Caritas. Caritas helps those homeless and in poverty gain access to food and water. So, even if you do not believe in wishes coming true, you can rest assured your money is used to help those in need.
