The Sampietrini
When you are in Rome, don’t just look at the art in front of you or over you. Look also down. You will meet the Sanpietrini, some small stone blocks, made from an extrusive rock typical of the volcanic areas around Rome. They decorate the beautiful streets of Rome.
Their name derives from the fact they were first used for the paving of St. Peter’s square during the maintenance works of 1725, right after the Pope’s carriage risked to overturn…so, pay attention when you walk, they could make you a joke.
