THE COLOSSEUM, BETTER THAN MODERN STADIUMS
The Colosseum owes its name to Nero’s Colossus, a statue 33,5 meters tall that used to be placed in front of the monument. This is a common fact and nowadays most historians agree on that. Yet, the Colosseum is really huge. Did you know it used to contain an audience of 87.000 people? According to the Guinness Book of Records, thanks to this number the Colosseum is the biggest amphitheater in the world. The state-of-the-art Wembley Stadium in London can host just a few thousand people more than the Colosseum. However, unlike modern stadiums, in Ancient Rome shows were free and all people got outside the Colosseum in just 10 minutes – not quite as you’re leaving your favorite singer’s last concert!
