History of Pizza Making

You can find it in almost every restaurant, in almost every city around the world, but no one does it better than the Italians! Pizza is one of the most recognizable dishes of Italian cuisine, but little is known to the general population about its creation.

For centuries the Romans and Greeks were eating different flatbreads with toppings, but the modern Pizza making we know today made its start in the southern city of Naples in Italy. In the 18th century, when Naples was still considered a kingdom, poorer families consumed the tasty dish because it was quick, cheap, and filling.

Italy’s unification in 1861 is where the legend of the Margherita pizza begins. The story states that when King Umberto and Queen Margherita traveled to visit Naples, they were tired of their lavish French cuisine. They requested an assortment of Pizzas, and the fable states Queen Margherita loved the tomato, mozzarella, and basil version so much, that it was dubbed the Pizza Margherita.

From then on Pizza became a staple in Italian cuisine, where it was brought over to the United States in the 20th century by Italian immigrants looking for work. People seemed to enjoy it, and the rest is history!

Now pizza is enjoyed by everyone around the world, but the most delicious remains in its birthplace, Italy.
